IDES OF MARCH
March 13 – 28, 2021

Ides of March is a collection, a gathering and possibly a conversation of a year bracketed by March 2020 and March 2021. With this project, Blind Alley acknowledges a year of contemplation and experience that most of us could not have imagined at its onset.

Interested in the lineage of Shakespeare’s famous line “beware the ides of March” by a soothsayer in Julius Caesar and noting the translation of the Latin Ides as divide, a marker of sorts in the early Roman lunar calendar, we propose an opportunity to consider our own time in relation to the implications and history of “the ides of March.” A day of ritual and sacrifice, a day to settle debts, a day that turned the trajectory of a world empire and resulted in civil war—an ancient day of reckoning in relation to a year that belongs to this moment, a year that we are only beginning to process as we imagine what history will do with it.
